Can you clean a Latex Mattress? Here are three tips

Singapore culture translates to hard work, diligence, and a terrific sense of timing. The often-hurried state is exacerbated by the pandemic, where on top of all the work hours, there is now a need for more frequent and thorough cleaning.

Experts have advised us to run our sheets and beddings through the washer at least once a week. Cleaning a latex mattress does not need to be as frequent, especially since our latex mattresses are dust-mite and fungi-free, but it is an available option in refreshing your mattress from time to time.

Here are a few ways to keep your latex mattress smelling fresh.

Deodorising sprinkle. Sprinkle baking soda over the All-Natural Latex Mattress and leave it for at least 30 minutes (or a couple of hours if you can spare it). Simply vacuum the baking soda after the dry ‘soak’.

Spot treatment. For areas with stains, you can use a damp cloth to wipe the surface off. Make sure to use gentle strokes so you are not pushing the dirt back into the latex mattress. You may also use a paste of baking soda and water, let that sit, and wipe after several minutes.

Gentle deodorising shower. Make a solution of a little bit of white vinegar in water and place it in a spritz bottle. You can also opt to add three-to-five drops of witch-hazel extract and your favourite essential oil. Lightly spray over the latex mattress and leave it to air dry.

For easy maintenance and cleaning of a latex mattress, the kind of cover is particularly important. Our SymFoni®mattresses are designed to make cleaning a much lesser hassle, with a two cover system:

1. Inner Cover. This is a light, cotton-mix fabric cover, not intended for washing. This protects the latex from tears. However, because latex cores are naturally mould-free, you can use the spot treatment mentioned above to remove or reduce stains.

2. Outer Cover. This is a premium Tencel cover, and its function is to protect the mattress from external elements. Our SymFoni® outer cover can be removed and machine-washed (cold cycle). However, because Tencel is a natural fabric, it should be dried on the line to avoid shrinkages.

With these covers, your mattress is well protected. Freshening up your latex mattress is not too much of a chore. Often, a good wipe down using a clean, damp cloth is all that is necessary– certainly, a hassle-free routine for the productive Singapore lifestyle.
